Mermaid Inn

I had a hot Valentine’s date this year with my 2 lovely roommates at The Mermaid Inn on 2nd Ave. between 5th & 6th st. This is one of their 3 locations (one on the UWS and an Oyster Bar in Greenwich).
I heard a lot of good things about the restaurant and the lobster & truffle mac and cheese only helped to seal the deal as far as picking this spot.
Sadly, we scoured the menu in advance and already knew what we were ordering when we sat down. The roster:

Oysters (east & west coast)
Butter Poached Main Lobster Risotto: Too dry & aldente for my liking. In my opinion, risotto should be creamy and slightly aldente. We had high expectations for this order, but were not too impressed.
Mustard Crusted Rainbow Trout: My decision was between this and seared skate. I asked the server if this was fried and his answer was no. I think you can tell by the photo that he was incorrect. Tastewise, the dish was good. However, when I order fish, I think less is more. I could barely taste the actual fish.
Lobster & Truffle Mac n Cheese: Had a sharp white cheddar taste, and I think I got 2 bites of lobster in the whole dish. I typically enjoy a creamier mac n cheese so this was not my fave. Needless to say, anything cheese + pasta = good.
Fried Brussels Sprouts with Bacon &Almonds: My fave dish of the night. I could have probably eaten this for my entree and been happy.
No dessert menu!!! But they gave us a small cup of chocolate pudding each, which was very tastey, but only led us to crave more sweets….leading us to:
…a self-serve, fro-yo heaven!!
Gets dangerous in there. (2nd ave and 9th st).
Mermaid Inn
Rating: B+
Pros: Brussel Sprouts! Fresh fish, next time I will try catch of the day
Cons: Rushed us out (done in 45mins!) but this could be due to V-day.
16Handles: A+++
