Sometimes you get hit with a craving. One that can only be suppressed with a big, fat cupcake.
But then you remember you have Celiac.
I can no longer grab a Crumbs cupcake or cookie at my leisure. So this past Sunday, when all I really wanted was something sweet that didn’t taste like cardboard, I decided that a trip down South (to the LES that is), was worth every painstaking moment on the F train.
Founded by Erin McKenna, Babycakes “offers all-natural, organic and delicious alternatives free from the common allergens: wheat, gluten, dairy, casein and eggs.”
This small shop, with servers outfitted in 1920′s garb, is usually packed with patrons looking for a sweet treat.
With much self control, I limited myself to two items:
Gluten-Free Carrot Cupcake: The icing was great. The cupcake in my opinion was somewhat bland. They do offer cupcake tops (which they were all out of), that I would probably prefer.
Oh, and I just found out they serve icing shots?! That is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard. They’ll cost ya $1.50 a pop, but save you from eating an entire jar of icing.
Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich. Excellent. Reminded me of Mrs. Fields cookie sandwiches that I loved getting at the mall when I was younger – only with a crunchier cookie (that crumbled very easily so be careful).
Don’t fret, if you don’t live in the NYC area, Babycakes recently opened up in LA and also offers their products via FedEx.
