Working around the corner, I’ve passed by Antojeria La Popular plenty of times & have always made a mental note to stop by and taste the menu.
However, it wasn’t until I found out that they had a gluten-free menu that I set the gears in motion and ended up there for a late afternoon Mexican lunch break.
From the team behind Taka Taka and Viva La Crepe, Antojeria (aka Mexican street snacks eatery) La Popular is a Mexican tapas joint on Spring St. in Nolita.
Their menu consists of various ceviches, tacos and tostados, including a cricket option. Yes, as in the insect. I actually asked the waitress what it was and her response was, “cricket, like the bug”. Pass!
Instead, I got the following:
Everything was delicious but my absolute favorite was the quesadilla. The corn tortilla was soft and the cheese was perfectly melted.
I also grabbed a beverage:
No dessert for me but they do offer a flourless chocolate cake – put on the menu by the manager who happens to be gluten-free.
Antojeria La Popular
Pros: Gluten-free menu. Sharable plates and happy hour M-F.
Cons: That quesadilla is only a block away from me daily.
