Siena Tavern

He may not have won Top Chef, but Fabio Viviani certainly came out on top. The season 5 fan favorite teamed up with restauranteurs David Rekhson & Luke Stoioff to open Siena Tavern; a rustic Italian restaurant/bar in River North, Chicago. The inspiration for the spot came after the team took a weeklong trip to Italy and immersed themselves in the culture and more precisely, the food. Peep the vid below: After hearing such amazing things about the restaurant, I made it a top priority to dine there while in Chicago. Knowing it was Italian, I was concerned about whether or not there would be a lot of gluten-free options. I was happily surprised to see that Siena Tavern...

Arami

Chicago is known for a few things; deep dish pizza, hot dogs and wind…but not sushi. That’s not to say that this city doesn’t churn out some amazing Japanese restaurants, and Arami happens to be one of them. In my neurotic fashion I called ahead to confirm that they had tamari (aka GF soy sauce) and was told that not only did they have it, but they also had a gluten-free menu. Unfortunately they don’t have a copy of their gluten-free menu posted online. However, we did order a bunch of stuff so you can get an idea. Including, but not limited to (I couldn’t grab photos of everything): First time I’ve ever seen brussels sprouts at a...

Meli Cafe

When traveling, it’s good to have a local with you that knows the turf and the ins and outs of where to eat and where to stay away from. Our lovely Chicago host brought us to Meli Cafe for breakfast before we hit the tarmac and headed back to the greatest city in the world (nyc that is). The first thing I noticed when I opened the menu was this: I already liked this place and I hadn’t even tried the food yet.   Although I didn’t order off the gluten-free menu, our waitress was knowledgeable enough to let me know what was safe to eat. I went with:     Spicy Flamenco Omelet w/ chicken chorizo, jalapenos, onions, tomato, avocado & cilantro...

Tavern on Rush

Tavern on Rush

Situated amongst the plethora of restaurants in Viagra triangle (yes this is a real thing), it is hard to miss Tavern on Rush.   The restaurant’s outdoor tables were bustling with boisterous families, children and people eating breakfast before hitting up Lollapalooza for the day; which was exactly what we were doing.   On a Sunday afternoon with a party of 10, I was sure we would be waiting forever to sit. However, I was pleasantly surprised when we were seated within 5 minutes on the 2nd of level of this bi-level steakhouse.     Upon scouring the menu I came across the Naked Veggie Burger. I haven’t had a veggie burger in months because they are usually...

Lollapalooza ’12

Lollapalooza ’12

On August 2nd I hopped on my first (and last) Spirit Airlines flight to Chicago O’Hare in anticipation of a wonderful weekend of music, food, friends and partying, also known as Lollapalooza. Having been there the year before and knowing that they only serve beer and wine to the general admission attendees, I prepared an alternate game plan known as: capture the vodka… …which basically was having my friends with VIP bracelets snag me some vodka/sodas from the bar area. Considering the fact that a glass Pinot Grigio would put me straight to bed, I didn’t really have a choice.   Suggestion #1 to Lolla: GF beer or sell vodka – preferably with...
