Rayuela

Not only does Rayuela literally translate from Spanish to English as “hopscotch”,  but upon close inspection, you will notice that their logo actually resembles the childhood game. Is chef Máximo Tejada a big fan of the playground skipping game or what? According to NYmag.com, it’s a “reference to Tejada’s penchant for grabbing culinary references from around Latin America and the world.”      Another thing he grabbed from around the world? The Californian oak tree growing inside this LES restaurant. That’s right – there is a tree going straight up from the ground level lounge to the second level balcony. I mentioned that I...

L’Apicio

L’Apicio

From the team that brought you distinct Italian fare in the heart of the West Village comes a (relatively) new venture, L’Apicio. Gabriel Thompson and Joe Campanale took their show on the road and set up a large scale version of their bite sized spots Dell’Anima and L’Artusi, right off of Bowery in East Village/LES.   Having been to both west village spots, I had faith that L’Apicio would be far from a disappointment. The vibe is completely different. Instead of entering an cozy date spot, this place is a much more sizable, with sky high ceilings and 180+ seats. Still an intimate ambiance - but now suitable for a girls night out as well. The menu...

Grub Street Food Festival

In case you missed it – here is a brief round up of the Grub Street Food Festival – which took over the weekly Hester Street Fair grounds this past Sunday. I grabbed a banana fluffernut [almond marshmallow dipped in white chocolate & peanut butter, covered in chopped banana chips] from Kitty Lee Thomas sweets – serving up all gluten-free treats. It was actually amazing (in case you couldn’t tell from the description). Next stop was Pop Karma, serving up all gluten-free popcorn in crazy flavors like: mediterranean, porcini cheddar & bacon apple bourbon caramel. You can visit their shop on 95 Orchard or order online. I stopped by BaoHaus...

CO-OP Food & Drink

There are times when you want a good meal, and other times when you want a fun, young scene. There are a handful of places that provide both, but they are few and far between (and difficult to get last minute reservations at).  Usually I am a huge advocate of trying new restaurants/unique places when I go out to eat. However, when friends ask me for a recommendation for a birthday dinner/party, I know they aren’t looking for a Michelin star rated joint or the new farm to table eatery. Instead, they’d rather go to a place that is infiltrated with adolescence, looking more to party than to chow down. Enter CO-OP Food & Drink in the Rivington Hotel in the...

The Fat Radish

The Fat Radish

I’ve been wanting to try this place for quite some time, so when I was aimlessly wandering around the LES looking for a lunch spot, I was pleasantly surprised when I turned the corner and found The Fat Radish.   The decor was perfect, the waiting to be seated was not. But nevertheless, we spent the time playing DrawSomething and Foodspotting photos of the dishes at this place. Time well spent in my opinion.   By the time we sat, we knew exactly what we were ordering, what was gluten-free and who we were splitting with.   We started with:     The Fat Radish Plate (gluten-free): Big ol plate of veggies and side of rice. The description said it included brussels...
