Hampton Chutney Co.

Hampton Chutney Co.

You no longer have to reside in the Hamptons to enjoy the Hampton Chutney Co. After meeting at an ashram (a hermitage, monastic community, or other place of religious retreat for Hindus.), Isabel & Gary MacGurn decided to open an Indian inspired eatery in 1997. In 2001, they expanded to NYC in two addition locations. Specializing in gluten-free dosas (large, crispy, sourdough crepes) & gluten-free uttapams (same as dosas, just served as a pancake), I knew it was only a matter of time before I tried this spot.   Named after their famous chutney (Cilantro, Curry, Mango, Tomato, Peanut, Pumpkin (seasonal)), each order comes with your choice of sauce. I...

Candle Cafe

5 years ago if you had asked me to dine at a Vegan restaurant, my immediate answer would be no way. Fast forward to today, and I am the one begging my friends to join me at one of these places. With the abundance of delicious vegan food served at several NYC restaurants, one could easily be fooled into eating animal free without even being aware of it. Enter Candle Café, one of 2 NYC locations (UES & UWS), which has an interesting history. Owners Bart Potenza & Joy Pierson expanded the once tiny “Healthy Candle” into the present Candle Cafe after winning a pick-5 lottery for $53k in 1993! Talk about a sign. Another plus of Vegan restaurants? Since...

Citrus Bar & Grill

As mentioned in the past, two cuisines that are easy to eat gluten-free are Japanese (abundance in rice) and Mexican (abundance in corn). What better idea than to marry the two into one distinct restaurant, also known as Citrus in NYC’s Upper West Side. Owner & Executive Chef Louis Lanza (also of Josie’s and Josephina), is known for his health conscience cooking and innovative menus. It is no wonder that when compiling the Citrus Gluten-Free Menu, it actually filled up 2 pages! Check this place out on a Friday or Saturday night, and it will be bustling with a young crowd. If you are looking to dine with a more demure crowd, I would try earlier in...

Gina La Fornarina

Gina La Fornarina

It is a rarity that I travel to the upper west side. However when I do find myself there, I’ve noticed that there are a bunch of unique restaurants that are worth checking out. After some hardcore boxing at Reebok Sports Club (which by the way is an awesome gym), I decided to grab a light bite. I wanted to take advantage of the cool summer night and sit outside, and Gina La Fornarina looked like a perfect place to do so. My wonderful friends allowed me to do the ordering because they did not feel like dealing with the dreaded gluten questions. The menu was heavy in gluten (pizza/pasta/meatballs), however there were a handful of items available that seemed great...

Aroma Espresso Bar

Aroma Espresso Bar

Ever since my trip last summer to Israel, I yearned for an “iced coffee” from Aroma Espresso Bar. I use the term iced coffee loosely since it more resemebled a coffee coolata of some sort. Anyway – since shipping a few back to the USA was not an option, I succumbed to the fact that I will have to revisit the holy land before I ever held another one of these beverages in my hand. That was until I realized that they had opened a handful of Aroma Espresso Bars in NYC – 3 to be exact. I headed to the 42nd street location this past weekend to grab a quick lunch.  There were a ton of salads to choose from, including a classic Israeli and quinoa. I went...
